SAINT NICK
Westlife star shuns sex, drugs and rock and roll for a family life with childhood sweetheart and twin sons.
He achieved fame and wealth and become a heart-throb to millions of young women around the world, but pop idol Nicky Byrne says nothing has compared to the love he has for his wife and twin sons.
As he gets ready to celebrate 10 years as a high flyer with Westlife with a summer concert at Croke park, Byrne reveals that Bertie Ahern's beautiful daughter, Georgina, has always been his number one.
The celebrity couple met at secondary school in Dublin's Baydole when he was 16,and Nicky now 29,says he remained faithful to the shy young woman throughout his years as a member of one of the worlds biggest boybands.
TEMPTED
In an exclusive interview, Nicky tells the Sunday World: "I don't think there was a time when I was ever really tempted I knew what I had. I was in love with Georgina and I always wanted her to share everything with me.
"I always had my head screwed on, to be honest with you. But we were all the same as a band. None of us were interested in the sex, drugs and rock 'n roll lifestyle.
"I never wanted to put some cocaine up my nose. I'd have a few drinks a laugh and leave it at that. I never wanted to lose what I had.
"The thought of having a bachelor lifestyle and maybe buying an apartment and hanging out in Renards and places like that just doesn't appeal to me."
Nicky and Georgina will celebrate five years of marriage next August, and are now parents to twins Rocco and Jay, aged eight months.
The boys are asleep upstairs as he chats with the Sunday World in the basement of his palatial home in Malahide.
Byrne is clearly besotted as he talks about his little sons.
"From the first time they focus on you to the first time they smile at you it's just absolutely mind blowing," he says. "Now they are trying to crawl."
But he admits that it was tough having two babies to cope with for the first time. "It's like constant jet-lag, that's how I describe it," he says.
"The hardest part about the twins is getting used to two little people, two feeds and two of everything. But then, you're not a pop star when you're at home and your baby is getting sick on your shoulder. you take it all on board and you adapt to it," he adds.
"It is hard work, but we have the best help in the world with our families. I think that’s very important to anybody who has kids. at one point we were going to get some help in, but we wanted them all to ourselves."
HOSTED
Westlife took four months out when Nicky's children were born.
"It was the worst summer we had weather wise in years, and I don't think I left the house, "he reveals.
"We just sat in with the babies all the time. I remember watching Dublin playing in the All Ireland last 16,and then the quarter final, from the comfort of my bed with the two lads (twins) beside me."
Nicky and Georgina hosted dinner on Christmas Day at their home for their families including their respective parents, Georgina's sister Cecelia and her boyfriend David, Nicky's brother Adam, his sister Gillian, her husband Mark, and their four-week old son Zack.
"It was a manic Christmas, "he says. "Usually myself and Georgina and her mam, Miriam, help with the dinner, and I would be in control of the bar and everyone would be chilled.
"This year Georgina and myself had our hands full with the twins. I think Miriam cooked the dinner, Bertie served it and my mam cleared up. It was a really great get together and the two families helped to make sure it went as smoothly as possible.
DRINK
"The first thing I did when Bertie came in was hand him a pint.
We were then busy with the twins, so he was walking around the house, talking to my dad and having a drink at the bar...just being the other grandad really."
Despite the hard work and tiredness that goes with babies,Nicky says the romance hasn't gone out of his marriage to Georgina.
"You have to work on it, "Nicky tells me ."I don't think romance goes out of the window. I think you have times when it's very tough, but you gotta work on that. You’ve gotta be as romantic as you can be when you've had 20 minutes sleep."
SINGER'S HURT BY ATTACK ON DAD-IN-LAW.
by Eddie Rowley
Nicky Byrne admits it's hard watching his dad-in-law Bertie taking a bashing in the political arena.
"I don't think you can ever just look at it as politics," he admits. "It is hurtful, obviously more for Georgina and Cecilia, although I would be very protective as well. It's only natural that you protect your own.
"I don't think people understand that just because he's a high-profile person doesn't mean he's not a human being with feelings.
STRONGER
"When you're in the public eye, people treat you like a commodity and they think they can say whatever they like about you.
"But I think Bertie comes out stronger in the end of it all. He just gets on with his job. We never discuss politics in the house, but one thing that’s very evident from him is that he just loves Ireland."
NICKY SO PROUD OF SISTER ACT
Nicky is proud of his sister-in-law Cecelia's success with P.S.I Love You, and her best selling novels.
"She's like my little sister because I've known her since she was 13-14. Back then she would sit in front of the telly and watch movies over and over again," he reveals.
"She always had that creative mind and I have always been proud of her. There are so many things that happened to her in the last five years that I have her saved in my phone as Congratulations! at this stage."
