Nicky’s Interview – Tour Book – The Love Tour 2007

What was the best thing that happened to you in 2006?
‘That was finding out myself and Georgina were expecting our first baby – and then finding out it was twins! After all our years together and then getting married, it’s the start of a whole new era and it’s very exciting. Everyone keeps telling us it will totally change our lives so we’re really looking forward to it. It will be two buggies, two car seats, two everything. The only thing is, myself and Georgina don’t travel light as it is, so it’s going to be like a Mammas & Pappas party roadshow when they arrive.’
What’s your biggest luxury?
‘Time off! We don’t get a lot of it so when we do, I try make the most of it. I don’t spend much money on myself otherwise. We have a beautiful home together which is well beyond our wildest dreams, so I like treating my parents and brother and sister whenever I can. Every now and again, Georgina pushes me into treating myself to a watch though!’
What’s your greatest fear?
‘It’s always been getting a phone call when I’m away to say I have to come back because something has happened to a family member. It happened once in the very early days but it hasn’t happened since, thank God. You can’t live your life like that either, though. You have to do what you do and live life to the full.’
What’s your favourite album or song right now?
‘I really like Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars and The Killers, and I love Patience by Take That. It’s great to see those guys back. For a long time, we were becoming the granddaddies of pop and all of a sudden, we’re the youngsters again! Healthy competition keeps us on our toes too. It raises the bar and we now get to rise to the challenge.’
What’s your current favourite food?
‘I’ve always enjoyed Japanese food like sashimi, but I can never get away from a good Irish Sunday dinner too. Roast potatoes, cabbage, chicken, gravy, mushy peas. Almost like a Christmas dinner.’
What’s the last thing you bought?
‘Believe it or not, it was an excess baggage charge at Manchester Airport. They charged me E200 because my bag was a couple of kilograms over and I had one extra bag. It really annoyed me!’
What’s the one thing you never travel without?
‘Not a lot! No, it has to be my mobile. I don’t know what I used to do without it. And a Blackberry as well.’
Where’s your favourite place to go on holiday?
‘We just bought a place in Portugal and we love it down there. Miami is great too. A few years back, myself and Georgina, Shane and Gillian went on holiday to Miami together and we had a great time just shopping, sunbathing, eating out.’
If you were invisible for a day, what would you do?
‘I’d like to wander into a football dressing room before a big match and hear what was being said. Or be in the room when Simon [Cowell] and Louis [Walsh] are having a conversation about Westlife to see what they’re planning.’
Who’s your hero?
‘My mum and dad. They gave us everything as kids and I am what I am because of them.’
What one question would you like to answer to?
‘What happens when you die?’
What’s your biggest wish right now?
‘Obviously that everything goes to plan with our babies, and everyone’s healthy and happy.’
If you weren’t in Westlife, what would you do?
‘I’d love to be a Hollywood actor, but if we’re sticking with normal jobs, I did all the tests for the Irish police force and that would have been good. I like jobs where you don’t know what to expect every day.’
What would be the perfect present someone could buy you?
‘At this point in time, probably two packets of nappies!’
How would you describe yourself?
‘A winner.’
Tell us something we don’t know about you.
‘There’s a music quiz on the Playstation called Buzz and, despite the fact I’m in the music industry, my seventeen-year-old brother beats me hands down every time. My sister too. Both of them wipe the floor with me. I’m quite competitive and I got really annoyed about it over Christmas! I say I’m a winner but I’m a looser every time on that. I won’t even play it any more because it puts me in such a bad mood.’
