Kian Interview In O2 Magazine
Flying Without Wings...
Love them or loathe them, the luck of the Irish has always been with Westlife. We caught up with boyband-star Kian Egan
Is it true you've lasted longer than Boyzone and Take That?
Well yeah, certainly before their reformations. We've been around for nine years, producing a record and a tour every year.
Things looked like they were going downhill when Brian left, so how did you get over it?
Brian's departure from the band changed the whole perspective of what we do and why we do it. A lot of things that went on made us become a very strong unit and a very strong pop band again.
How did you feel when he left?
Angry, upset, devestated; it was like a member of your family telling you they didn't want to be in the family anymore.
And would you let him back?
We've had one or two conversations where he said 'Oh, let's do a reunion tour and I'll come back in'. But we've said no, because he left the band and you can't then expect them to take you back. It doesn't work like that.
What advice would you give prospective pop bands to getting into the industry?
Wait for a few years 'til it all changes again, 'cos the music industry is a messed up place at the moment. Go do The X Factor if you have amazing talent and you want to be a pop singer because unfortunately it's the only way through at the minute.
The team around you has always been very strong. How much do you equate your success to them?
Oh, without a doubt they're a huge part of it. Simon Cowell is the master of what people want to hear, and Louis Walsh had experience with Boyzone. We were lucky, it was all timing and we got it right.
Apart from the music, what has been the coolest thing that you've experienced as part of Westlife?
Meeting the Pope was a big, big thing for us, but mixing with the big chiefs in America - like going to incredible parties and hanging out with people like Puff Daddy and Whitney Houston - is something we'll never forget.
You have always been labelled as boring - do you think you have courted that?
We don't have any illusions about what we do or who we are. We've stuck to a formula giving people what they want since we started, and it has treated us incredibly well with 14 number 1 hits and 40 million record sales. It's a good start!
Westlife play The O2 Arena on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 March, and their new album Back Home is out now, including new single 'Us Against The World'.
