Shane shivers with the rest of them February 20th 2007
A COUPLE of Saturdays ago Sligo-based Westlife star Shane Filan found out to his cost that cut-price flights to England are not always all they’re cracked up to be. Filan, his wife and baby daughter were near the front of a “priority boarding” queue at Ireland West Airport, Knock, when they were invited to board the Ryanair flight on a freezing morning made to seem even colder by the sight of lumps of snow lying all around (for those of you who have never visited the airport, it’s up on a hill south of Charlestown that gets all manner of weather).
The trouble was, passengers on the incoming flight from Luton were still getting off the plane – so the millionaire singer and his family, along with a growing group of fellow travellers, had to huddle together at the foot of the steps getting progressively colder as the late-exiters straggled off.
Our Bits & Pieces informant tells us that Filan’s presence on the flight was all the talk of passengers at the other end on the bus to Luton Airport’s car hire complex. “You wouldn’t have thought he’d need to take a Ryanair flight with all his money,” said one.
“Perhaps it’s because he DOES take Ryanair that he has all that money,” said another. And a third mused that, perhaps, with all his well-documented riches, he books a year’s worth of flights to England in advance so he’s always got a seat for a quick weekend trip to England. It’s amazing what strangers will talk about when they’re travelling.
