BRIAN McFadden has always been a pretty unlikeable bloke.
Firstly, for singing bland songs in Irish boy band Westlife. Then, after he ditched his wife, pop star Kerry Katona, and hooked up with Delta Goodrem he was widely quoted as saying: "I have never been this happy in my whole life."
Insulting comments like that must sting like a slap in the face to the mother of his two young children.Clearly, their births didn't mean anything special to him. Meeting Goodrem did.
But now he has realised his languishing solo career hasn't got a hope of taking off in America, he and Goodrem have returned to London. McFadden insists he wants to keep a closer eye on his children.
You see while he's been off swanning around the globe with Goodrem (Australia, New York and holidays in the Caribbean), Katona hasn't been coping too well as a single mum.
She's had a couple of stints in rehab, dated a few useless blokes and is engaged to a cabbie three weeks after splitting with another guy.
She's also been the one stuck at home to tuck the toddlers into bed each night, cook their meals, wash their clothes and do all the other mundane day-in, day-out duties that come with the package of motherhood. A few months ago Katona rightly said: "The girls hardly see their dad. I'm the one who's been there for my girls, not their dad."
She added that she's happy for him to see them but that he has to be "reasonable" about their routines.
McFadden hit back with claims that when he returned Molly, 4, and two-year-old Lily-Sue from a recent access visit he found Katona in bed with a hangover and a strange man answered the door.
While it doesn't sound like an ideal situation, who can blame the woman for having a drink while her children are away on a visit with their father?
Mothers receive much harsher judgment than fathers. He's been able to pursue his solo career (and Goodrem) since walking out in 2004, but Katona's expected to stay home, remain single and, it seems, not have a drink.
They were 22 when they married, he at the height of Westlife fame. She had by then chosen motherhood over her career, leaving her band Atomic Kitten a year earlier when she fell pregnant.
Twenty months on and McFadden now wants to play dad again by seeking custody. While Katona's probably not the perfect mum (who is?) at least she's been there as a parent since he walked out.
