Chapter 8
Georgina and Fiona exchanged glances. Mark looked at the floor while Nicky had a shocked expression on his face. After awhile, Louis and Simon tucked in their meals in silence, casting furtive glances towards Shane and Kian. Everyone else silently started to return to their meals too, except Shane-he was just pushing his food around with his fork.
Finally, Kian decided he should say something. "Erm...Gemma..." Without turning to look at him, Gemma said "Yes, Egan?" "That girl you're talking about..." "Mhm, where is she? I was told she'd be here. Can't wait to meet her." Her tone had turned cold, and she was cutting the baby back rib that Shane had put onto her plate with a certain forcefulness that Georgina recognized as irritation. Even when they were little girls, Gemma was always called "Xena," after the famous warrior princess on TV, because whenever she got upset or mad things were never pretty afterwards. Georgina decided she had to do something, or things would just get worse. So she struck up a conversation with Nicky and Fiona. Soon, everyone else picked up what Georgina was doing and the table pretty much got back to normal. Except, of course, for Kian, Gemma...and Shane. Even though he was already chattering away with Nicky about something, he was still very bothered by what was going on between the two. He wondered how long he could take it; he didn't know Gemma very well, but he could feel that she was hurting and all he wanted was to ease her pain.
Gemma was too engrossed in semi-ignoring Kian and eating her dinner to notice Shane's mood though. "She...er..." Kian struggled to find the right words. "I mean..." "I just think it'd be good if I met the immediate partners tonight. We don't want me shooing away a girlfriend thinking she's a fan, do we?" Gemma replied between sthingyfuls of mashed potatoes. "By the way, great cooking." "Thanks" was all Kian could manage. He took a deep breath and turned to look her in the eyes. "Gemma, the girl I'm falling in love with is-oh no, are you okay?" Before he could finish his sentence, Gemma had inadvertently cut herself with her knife instead of the meat on her plate. Blood started to seep out of the wound. "d**n," she muttered to herself. Shane had noticed too; without a word he offered Gemma his hand, said "I'll take care of this" to everyone else at the table and led her to the kitchen.
Kian watched them walk off and felt the last of his courage fade away. He had been sensing that something was up between Gemma and Shane ever since they'd walked in, but he'd brushed it off thinking he was probably just being paranoid. He now saw he was mistaken. Very mistaken. He knew Shane well enough to see that he was feeling something for Gemma as well. "All the bloody girls," Kian murmured. It wasn't often that Shane had feelings for a girl, but it was very often that they had feelings for him. Shane and Nicky had always been the babe magnets. Especially after Brian left. Not that he didn't have his own fans, mind. But Gemma...Gemma was different. Sighing, he decided that he might as well drop it and hope he'd make it through the rest of dinner without breaking.
In the kitchen, Shane was attending to Gemma's finger. They'd started talking about horses again, and Gemma couldn't help but wish that Kian cared about her as much as Shane seemed to. She couldn't help but smile at the way he was holding her hand. His touch was warm. "You might want to hold onto something, Gem," Shane said. "I'll be swabbing your wound a bit with this antiseptic alcohol, and it's going to sting a little." Gemma put her other hand on his arm. "Nobody stronger than a horse-riding lad, methinks," she laughed. At that, Shane looked up at her. His gaze seemed to be telling her something, but after awhile he looked back at the finger and gently dabbed it with the alcohol-doused cotton. He was right; it did sting. "It hurts," she said, her voice barely a whisper. Without looking up, Shane finished tending to the wound, but he didn't let go of her hand. She didn't let go of his arm either. Slowly, he looked up and their eyes met.
Before he could help himself, he kissed her. It was soft and slow, but it was enough to send tingles through Gemma's body.

Chapter 9
He pulled away slow and watched to see her reaction. To his relief, she smiled. Neither of them said a thing for a moment. Then Shane broke the silence. "I couldn't help it. You're so beautiful, Gemma. And all I want is to see you happy." Gemma's eyes welled with tears. "Oh Shane, how did you know?" He hugged her tight. "I could just feel it. I know you love Kian. I can see it." "But he doesn't love me," she whimpered. "He doesn't care." "He does, he loves you." Shane said quietly. At that, Gemma pulled away and looked him in the eyes. "What are you talking about?" "You're the girl he's crazy about." "Then why...how..." all of a sudden Gemma couldn't say a thing. "I kissed you because somehow, it felt right. Because somehow, I hoped it would make you smile. You're an amazing person, and it kills me more than you know that Kian can't see that straight off the bat. He's so lucky to have a girl like you in love with a guy like him. It really does." Shane answered. He looked away, then looked as if he was going to say something else. Instead, he started walking towards the door. Gemma followed suit and they both made their way back to the dining room in silence.
"It takes 15minutes to clean and dress a cut on the finger?" Simon exclaimed in their direction when they walked in. Gemma quickly answered "If you're as clumsy as I am and as hilarious as Shane here, 15 minutes is actually fast!" and laughed. She turned to Shane who started laughing as well. As she sat back down into her seat, she could feel Kian's gaze. She knew he probably didn't believe the excuse she'd made as to why she and Shane had taken a bit longer than expected. It was all she could do not to laugh in his face. Instead, she joined Shane in an animated discussion over football with Nicky, Georgina, Louis and Fiona. "Gemma..." Kian finally said a few minutes later. "Yes, Kian?" she answered with a half-hearted smile. "Would you still be interested to know about the girl?" "What girl?" "The one I believe I've fallen in love with." There was a hint of sadness in his voice, and when Gemma looked into his blue eyes they seemed to be distant. "Oh. Her. Can it wait? Pure Class and I are in the middle of something." Gemma said, tilting her head in Shane's direction. At the sound of his nickname Shane looked over. "Yes, Twinkle?" Gemma laughed. "Wasn't talking to you, hotshot. I was telling Kian something." "Oh. Right then." Shane smiled and turned back to Nicky and everyone else. "Twinkle?" Kian asked, a questioning look on his face. Gemma laughed again. "Nickname. Long story." "Oh." He didn't know what to say to that. "Erm...you just go back to your convo with everyone else. I can always tell you things later right?" he ended his statement with a question and a tone of hopefulness in his voice that almost made Gemma break. But she held herself together...she knew she had control of the situation now, and she wanted to sort herself out before anything. Kian was on the edge of his seat, wondering how he would react if she suddenly told him right then that she didn't really care anymore.

Sorry I "disappeared", you guys. Got kinda sick and kinda busy. Anyway, here's the next chapter: Chapter 10
Thankfully, that didn't seem to be the case. "Sure," she shrugged before turning back to everyone else. Kian let out a sigh of relief. He wasn't feeling that better though; on the one hand he was glad she was at least talking to him, but on the other hand he was somewhat discomforted by the apparent closeness that she and Shane now shared. "Oh well," he muttered.
The rest of the meal went pretty smoothly, with Gemma and Shane getting on as if they'd been best friends all their lives. Occasionally one of them would say something to Kian, who either nodded or made an affirming sound instead of saying a thing. Instead of getting the vibe, however, Gemma found herself really enjoying Shane's company and really getting into their conversations. While they ate, their topics ranged from sports, horses (both raising them and racing them), music and to almost anything else. Kian was involved in a lively conversation as well, thanks to the quick thinking of Georgina who could already kind of tell what was going on.
When everyone had had their fill of all the food, Louis gave a bit of a talk on why he had chosen Gemma and on exactly what she was now capable of. He ended his 'speech' with the words "She's about as much the boss of you four as Simon and I are, got that?" It reminded Gemma of what Anto had told her hours earlier, and she smiled at the notion. "Now that we're all set and done," Mark said, "Who wants to go out and have a bit of fun? Aside from you," he added, turning to Fiona who was just about to say something. Nicky and Georgina then said that they wanted to go as well.
Gemma wanted to go, but she remembered that she wouldn't have a proper ride home if she did. She still wanted to spend time with Shane though, so she thought quickly. "I'll pass on this one, Marky," she said with a smile. "I want to show Shane my horses." Fiona raised a brow. "At this hour?" "I don't mind," Shane quickly jumped in. He somehow felt Gemma's need for a change of pace. "She's told me so much about them I can't wait to see 'em." "Where are your horses, Gem?" Fiona turned to Gemma, trying not to sound too worried. "In their stables, of course. There's a huge stretch of land in my backyard; I turned it into horse grounds." Gemma grinned in Georgina's direction; Kian was a few feet away from Georgina, and he had suddenly turned completely silent. "Anyway, you guys go and have fun. Shane and I are off to the stables...unless y'all would like to come along and see my horses too, which would be fine by me." She looped an arm through Shane's and they made their way out the door to his car arm-in-arm and laughing away. It was the start of what was going to be an interesting night.
