BRIAN McFadden's insecurities over "Princess" Delta Goodrem have been blamed for the end of their seven-year relationship.
Goodrem is understood to have called off her engagement to McFadden last week after months of drifting apart.
McFadden, 30, and Goodrem, 26, confirmed their engagement and relationship was finished in a joint statement yesterday.
"This decision has been made with a lot of soul searching from both parties with the realisation that they have grown apart," the statement said.
"They leave the partnership with respect for one and other, wishing each other success and happiness for the future."
Friends said McFadden had found life difficult in Delta's golden shadow and had struggled to balance the public's adoration of her, while he was constantly painted as a reckless bad boy.
"In some ways, it was hard for him to be the back seat to the Delta Show," one said.
"No one could live up to that expectation."
Both parties are said to be heartbroken over the split.
Yesterday, McFadden tweeted: "I love Delta and always will. She is one of God's living angels. I thank her for giving me the best years of my life. Please give us time. x"
Pals insist the split was mutual and no third parties were involved.
But one close friend added: "The writing had been on the wall for quite a while".
While Goodrem has spent almost a decade as Australian pop's golden child, McFadden has been dogged by controversy, a string of Twitter wars and headline-making behaviour.
In February, Federal Police were called to meet him at an airport following allegations of being abusive to staff, drunken behaviour and smoking on a V Australia flight from LA - all of which McFadden has denied.
Last week, the Grand Prix celebrity driver caused a scene at Melbourne's Rockpool restaurant - walking out after verbally abusing staff.
On the track, he was also reckless, running ironman Shannon Eckstein off the road in a preliminary race.
McFadden will be taken out by friends this weekend in Sydney to drown his sorrows, while Goodrem is understood to be holed up in Los Angeles. Fellow Aussie, presenter Renee Bargh, has been comforting the Lost Without You singer.

FIRST there was a failed marriage, now a broken engagement. But yesterday there was still one woman standing firmly by distraught Brian McFadden's side -- his devoted mother Mairead.
As the former Westlife star went into hiding following his shock split with his partner of seven years, Delta Goodrem, Mairead broke her silence to tell the Sunday Independent: "He will be OK. He's my son and I love him."
As he nurses his broken heart, the star has confided in friends that he will never return to live in Ireland again -- but is considering a move to the UK so he can be closer to his daughters Lily Sue and Molly from his marriage to Kerry Katona.
Yesterday, at the family's home in Artane, his tearful mother, clutching a handkerchief, said: "He's my son and I love him. He'll be OK and Delta'll be OK. As far as I'm concerned, they haven't broken up. They haven't said anything to me. I was only talking to him yesterday ."
Brian was given his marching orders by Australian pop singer Delta after a series of rows over his increasingly erratic behaviour.
Last month, he was questioned by federal police after an alcohol air-rage allegation by a fellow passenger on a flight from LA to his adopted home city of Sydney. He denied any wrongdoing.
He also hit the headlines when his new single was slammed amid allegations that the lyrics glorified date rape. McFadden fiercely denied the criticism and claimed the lyrics were about his fiancee Delta, despite the fact that she doesn't drink.
Now friends and family are said to be "seriously concerned" that the star will go off the rails without the back-up of his closest friend, Delta.
As one Dublin-based friend said this weekend: "He's always said Delta is his rock. Without Delta around, there are worries he could slip back to his days of drinking and partying. What else do you do when you've nothing to lose?"
Brian's split came as he was making a successful new life in Australia, where he stars as a judge on Australia's Got Talent and still enjoys a solid music career. Friends in the Delta camp say she was left reeling by Brian's increasingly wild behaviour and was "extremely concerned" that it was affecting her reputation and career. Following his air-rage incident, Delta warned him she would pull the plug on their wedding if he didn't straighten out his behaviour.
A source explained: "Delta is no fool. She still loves him deeply, but her friends were reminding her she's only 26 and it wasn't too late to get out and find Mr Right. She's heartbroken, but she knows it's the right thing to do."
