The popularity of boy bands is a great thing for pop music, Westlife have told Sky News. The release of their new album Gravity comes hot on the heels of Take That's record success. The re-formed group are celebrating after their latest album became the fastest-selling for 13 years. Progress sold more than half a million copies in its first week and easily took the Number One spot in the album charts. But Westlife told Sky News they do not feel threatened by their contemporaries. "The Take That boys are amazing. We've always been big fans of them," singer Nicky Byrne said. "I think there's room out there for a bit of competition." The Irish group said their new album was 'something special' Bandmate Shane Filan added: "It's great for pop music - I think boy bands are very much alive." The group have been together 12 years and said the challenge with each new offering was to "bring our music up to date". Byrne said: "We did a lot of writing on this album as well, which is new for us. "We got in the studio and wrote an awful lot of stuff. Some of the tracks on there are very personal." Kian Egan went on: "The most important thing for us is great songs, to try and better what we've done previous. "We definitely feel this album in particular has got something special in it, something new in it."
