Sligo Rovers boosted by Westlife donation Sligo Rovers have expressed their delight at a donation of 25,000 euro from Westlife. The donation comes as the Sligo super-group bought band memorabilia from the club after avid collector Gavin Walsh donated the items which he accumulated over the past ten years. Sligo Rovers' Robbie Fitzpatrick said that this was an incredible gesture especially in the current climate of league of Ireland football. The money is a welcome boost to the club who have been well documented as struggling financially. Speaking to Ocean FM News, Mr Fitzpatrick said that the donation is extremely important to the club. Meanwhile Gavin Walsh who donated the collection to Sligo Rovers said that he is delighted that the memorabilia has gone to where it belongs. Credit/Source: www.oceanfm.ie

Westlife give Rovers a €25,000 lifeline Anita Guidera BOYBAND Westlife have snapped up some rare memorabilia from their early career before it went to auction and thrown a lifeline to their local cash-strapped soccer team. The Sligo group paid €25,000 for the 250 items that have been painstakingly gathered by local collector Gavin Walsh after he donated them to a fundraising auction to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Sligo Rovers' FAI Cup Final win over Bohemians, and the band's 10th anniversary. Shane Filan said he and the other members of the group -- Nicky Byrne, Mark Feehily and Kian Egan -- decided to put in the bid earlier this week when they realised the collection had become available. "We first saw the collection five years ago and were very impressed by it. When we heard it was going to be auctioned we agreed we should make an offer. "Our view was that it was better for the collection to end up with Westlife than anywhere else. We can now put it together with all the other memorabilia we have ourselves so that the complete collection will be in safe keeping. "It's hard to put a price on these things but it is of great sentimental value for us," he explained. Punk rock fan Gavin Walsh (43) started the collection in 2000 -- two years after Westlife was formed -- as "a civic duty". Credit/Source: www.independent.ie
