Jodi Interview In Irish Mirror
'I'm not going to lie... it's a lot of money and we'd be mad to turn OK! down. It's the most special day of our lives and this is our way of sharing it with people.'
I’m always amazed at how people act in peculiar ways when they are around celebrities.
It’s Thursday afternoon and I’m standing in line in a coffee shop with Jodi Albert who is soon to become Mrs Kian Egan at a lavish beach ceremony in the Bahamas.
We're at the slightly less glamorous surroundings of Belfast’s Victoria Square shopping centre where there’s not a palm tree, hammock or heatvave in sight or a big magazine picture deal for that.
But the 24 year old actress gamely promises me she is in the mood for a big blow out on the credit card and I’m relishing the potential of such a spectacle.
Her fiance Kian is back at the hotel conducting meetings about the band and Jodi has invited me to show her a good time around Belfast.
Without warning the young assistant who was serving us ducks behind the counter and indiscreetly summons her colleague over, who indiscreetly crawls along the ground towards her "Look its your woman from Hollyoaks, Jodi Albert" whispers the brunette excitedly.
Her colleague with about as much discretion as an elephant climbing on board a bus leaps up for a split second catches sight of Jodi and then falls to the ground like an injured soldier to join her pal in the secret summit behind the counter. "Oh my God, it IS her. She must be here with Westlife. She’s stunning."
Then they momentarily gain their composure and rise to the till "That will be £4 for the two lattes please."
She announces with baffling calmness. It strikes me if this is the excitement the actress causes when just ordering coffee it is no wonder why OK! magazine is so keen to part with a rumoured £1.1million to gain access to their big wedding day.
Jodi hardly even noticed their antics and was completely unflustered.
While Kian has enjoyed global fame not to mention fortune with Ireland’s biggest boyband, Jodi has played an equal part in creating the glamorous edge that has made them one of Ireland’s most lovable and bankable couples.
Today she looks a million dollars dressed in a tight black emblazoned top "kiss me" and a pair of designer jeans.
Jodi is toned and striking with her cherry red lips and long full bodied wavy hair.
As she stirs her latte and pulls her chair in close I tell Jodi I want to know the secrets behind her spectacular wedding scheduled for next March.
I no she has been sworn to secrecy by virtue of OK! magazine of course. So I asked her if she toiled over the decision to sell her big day to the highest bidder.
Jodi says "Of course we thought about it and weighed up the pros and cons. But I’m not going to lie about it, it’s a lot of money and we would’ve been mad to turn it down.
It’s the most special day of our lives and this way we get to share it with people and have the whole thing controlled. We will only get to do this once."
I asked Jodi if she considered telling OK! where to stick their big bucks offer but Jodi is quick and decisive with her response: "The alternative is it becomes a free for all and you have paparazzi running around all corners of your wedding trying to get pictures. OK! take over the security and shut the thing down and it’s one less thing to worry about. And yes it’s great money and I make no apologies for that.
“I think if most people were offered that money they would take it. But one thing people can’t say is we are getting married for the money. I mean we have been together for years and we would’ve tied the knot a long time ago if that were the case."
And we can't forget she has taken pride in earning her own money over the years with high profile TV roles and fashion shoots.
Jodi also reveals she would like to "lose a couple of pounds" for the wedding.
She adds "I like being a nice comfortable eight and a half stone, I’m two pounds over that at the minute. But I hate skinny looking girls so there is no danger off me going on a crash diet or anything like that before I walk down the aisle.”
Jodi asks if we can continue the interview over at the house of Fraser's designer handbags section.
She adds "This could be dangerous, Kian never lets me loose in the handbags section anymore."
It’s not long before a crowd of admirers congregate around the shopping rails to catch a sneaky glimpse of my companion.
One girl even runs up embraces her and then asks "Do you hate all these people looking at you? You really are very beautiful in the flesh.”
Despite the fuss Jodi is still happy to continue our chat about her impending marriage and I ask: “How do you feel about being called a Westlife WAG?”
She momentarily flashes a killer look and scowls "I hate that word Paul, I never just want to be thought of as a girlfriend or wife of a Westlife singer.
“People think I just like to be known for doing men’s magazines and being Kian’s girlfriend. I was called a glamour model once and I was furious, I hated doing those sexy bikini shots if I’m honest I felt violated.
“I like to be sexy but sexy in a different way, though Kian loves the pictures and loves it when people talk about me looking sexy or hot when I’m in a TV show. He's fine with it.
“It’s difficult in a way because I’m never going to be anything as big as the whole Westlife phenomenon. But I don't think that should make me WAG by default. I’m more than just the wife to be of a popstar"
Later we get into my car with stacks of shopping bags and take Jodi back to her hotel were dozens of Westlife fans are camping out.
"Am I getting an invite to the wedding?" I cheekily ask hoping she will rubber stamp my passport to it.
"Well I don’t know about that you'll have to ask Kian" she diplomatically suggests.
With that she steps out and happily poses for pictures for delighted fans.
