Westlife Interview And Album Giveaway - 18 October 2007
by Andrew Hutchinson
Westlife's Shane Filan talks about the band's new single & album, why they won't be chasing the Christmas number one, their upcoming tour, the joys of fatherhood.
"It's an amazing thing; you feel very proud," says Westlife's Shane Filan on the joys of fatherhood. "Still, it's big worry though. You always worry about a fall or a slip. You're so worried about them all the time. It's mad."
Shane is positively gushing about his two-year-old daughter Nicole.
"She is such an amazing little girl and she really has a great personality now. She's so well behaved.
"I hope to have many more children."
Shane says his daughter is aware of his life in the spotlight.
"She knows daddy's on telly all the time, definitely. She knows I sing songs and stuff. She's actually starting to sing as well, which is scary. I say who's in the band with daddy and she'll say Mark, Kian and Nicky.
"She sings Home (Westlife's next single) now. She will attempt the whole song, like. I will sing bit of the line and she'll finish it, which is great, It is such a fabulous feeling like.
"To have a little girl, a little piece of you and your wife together, looking up at you is just amazing."
Home, a cover version of the Michael Buble song, is due to be released at the end of the month.
Shane says the decision to record the song was Simon Cowell's idea.
"He really wanted us to record the song. It's not really a well known song, but I think we have brought it slightly more mainstream and more pop. We will bring it to a bigger fanbase and audience as well.
"It was a lot harder to record some of the songs we recorded last year. Songs like Lionel Ritchie's Easy we're a lot harder to try and put our stamp on.
The YEP is keen to know whether Mr Buble has heard the Westlife version: "I don't know. I haven't a clue to be honest," admits Shane. "I'm sure he has. He's definitely going to be looking forward to the royalty cheques from us!"
The single will be followed by Westlife's ninth studio album, Back Home, which is out on Monday, November 5.
"This album is brilliant. We're really proud of it as it's back to basics, back, to a certain degree, to the music that made us famous. There are great original pop songs on there.
"I think for a Westlife fan they will love this album. It will cover every genre of favourite Westlife styles, I think."
Westlife have also just announced details of a nine-date UK tour which includes a date at the Hallam FM Arena in Sheffield on Tuesday, March 25, next year.
"One good thing is that there's going to be a lot of new songs," says Shane on the tour. "We will probably do five or six songs off the new album which will be good and fresh for the fans. But we are definitely going to put on a really extravagant show as it will be coming up to our tenth anniversary next summer.
"We are planning on not doing an album next year. It's going to be the first year that we haven't done an album. We are going to take a full 12 months off so that means there won't be a tour probably for two years after it so we are going to make this one a memorable one."
With global album sales of 36 million as well as a string of gongs and awards under their belt scene is keen to know what, if any, ambitions the band have yet to fulfil.
"Being here and staying here and selling the albums we sell every year," says Shane.
The YEP has ten copies of Westlife's new album, Back Home, to giveaway.

“Trying to make better music is one thing we want to do. We want to made better songs. We want to record with different producers. We want to experiment to a certain degree but not change Westlife’s style, if you know want I mean. We want to be bigger and better.”
He quickly adds: “We are never happy. I know that might sound very selfish but we want to be bigger and better in bigger countries. We would love to break America and I think that is definitely a possibility with Simon’s power over there now. And I think it’s something we will try to do over the next couple of years.”
l Westlife’s new single, Home, is due to be released on Monday 29 Octobe on the SonyBMG Records label. The band’s new album, Back Home, is out on Monday 5 November.
